A tip on how to get over your fear of public embarassment...

Go karaoke one night a week, with our without a friend.  You may go home with the knowledge that everyone who came was there for the same reason.  To have a good time without worrying about negative judgement from total strangers and whether or not they have talent. There will always be some stranger there to pat you on the back and give you encouragement no matter how badly you think you sound behind a microphone.  You're among friends, even if it's only for one night.  It doesn't matter how badly they think they sound, they're belting out songs they love and so are you.  The random encouragement rubs off.  Many people you see regularly may even be disappointed if you don't get up for a song you think you screwed up last time.  Hell, I'll even forget a line from a song I've done on a regular basis!  Sometimes you may find the courage to try a song that's out of your range just because you got bored with the usual set.

Some of them are a little tipsy, some don't really care how they sound no matter what they sing and others leave you wondering 'why isn't he/she famous?  Why haven't they been offered a record deal?'  But it doesn't really matter.  They had fun.

But if you're there to have a private conversation, have the sense not to hang out at the bar on that night!
